Justice League season 1 was good, but flawed. Characters lacked depth, dialogue was occasionally cliche, plot holes were everywhere, stories felt padded to fill the running time. With season 2, the creative staff went back and did some major tweaking. The end result is not only a much better season all around, but one that almost feels like a brand new series.

Where to begin? Superman is finally back to his super-powered self, and the season opener pits him against his long-time nemesis Darkseid in an epic-yet-personal space opera. Green Lantern begins to get more imaginative with his energy ring, and Wonder Woman is less a powerhouse barbie and more a rounded character. Continuity has a heavy role this season, with plot threads from both season 1 and the prematurely cancelled Superman series finding continuation here.

The stories themselves are an interesting yet strong mix. You have your standard action stories, but also some downright creepy moments (Only a Dream, Wild Card) and others that are just randomly bizzare (Hereafter). A holiday-themed episode lightens the mood just before everything hits the fan with the season finale “Starcrossed,” which if you’ve bought the previous dvd already know what it means for a certain Justice Leaguer. Overall there’s definitely some stories fans will prefer more than others, but there’s really not a dud in the bunch. It helps that strong character moments really hold everything together and give the stories a more personal edge. That and the tons of unexpected cameos and nods to the source material.

Animation is much improved over season 1, and the distracting CG elements are better implemented. It helps that the season is animated in true widescreen, and if Warner Bros. keeps its promise, that’s what we’ll be seeing on this set. Beyond all that, this is really a show that appeals to both kids and adults. Cartoon Network had a great hands-off policy, and season 2 pulls no punches. Kids will love the action and costumed characters, adults will do double-takes at the implied deaths, veiled innuendo, and all-around maturity. Bravo.

Season 1 of Justice League helped kicked things off. However, it’s the 2nd season where things really shine. Season 2 went on and improved the show’s animation, added on excellent subplots that carry on such as a growing relationship between Green Lantern and Hawkgirl, and increased eye-candy such as numerous guest appearances from characters from both the Superman and Batman toons, from supporting characters like Lois Lane, Ma and Pa Kent, and Alfred Pennyworth to classic villains like Lex Luthor, Brainiac, The Parasite, The Joker, and Clayface. New villains arrive as well, such as Eclipso, Dr. Destiny, Desparo, and even Doomsday, the monster that became infamous for killing Superman in the comics.

The quality of the stories increased as well. It starts off with Twilight, as the Justice League faces Darkseid and Brainiac(Ron Perlman and Corey Burton reprising their roles from the Superman cartoon).

In the center we have highlights such as Hereafter, in which the Justice League deals with the possibility that Superman is dead. Superman, however, is trapped in an apocolyptic future, with a former enemy now his only friend, ally, and hope of getting home.

A Better World is a 2-parter that helped set up the main storyline of the 4th season. It features the Justice League battling evil, alternate dimension versions of themselves, led by a ruthless dictator version of Superman you will love to hate. However the true highlight of the episode is an intense psychological faceoff between the two Batmen.

Wild Cards features the League facing off against the Joker in Vegas in a hilarious reality TV show homage, as they try to disarm bombs he’s planted while also fighting off his henchmen, the Wild Flush Gang, who in a clever touch happen to be voiced by the main cast of Teen Titans. It ends with hands down the best Batman/Joker battle ever, even putting ones seen in the comics to shame.

It all ends with the 3-part smash bang finale, Starcrossed, which end with an alien invasion(only fitting since that’s what got them together) and a shattering betrayal between one of the League’s members.

Since the debut of Batman: The Animated Series in 1992, the WB’s series of superhero shows that have since been known as the DCAU have continued to prove that animation can be intelligent, thought-provoking, and enjoyable for kids AND adults. Justice League season 2(which is released on the same day is Superman vol. 3!) is no different. A definite must buy.

Assuming you are a fan of Will Farrell, this movie will make you laugh out loud many times. It really won’t score any points for originality (it basically lacks a story) but there is definate chemistry between John C. Reilly and Farrell. Both actors need another strong male lead to be at their best (as we learned in watching “Walk Hard” and “Semi-Pro), so this works very well in this case. There are some appalling moments of crude humor, so be warned, and though many of the jokes have been used before, Farrell’s whiny childlike persona is less annoying when playing off the deadpan, unpredictable Reilly (who is a very good actor). Other talented members of the supporting cast (Steenburgen) give this film much more credibility than most comedies, and if nothing else, it makes for an evening of laughs. Worth the price of admission for just about anyone looking for a good comedy unless, of course, you are not a fan of Ferrell.

regardless of what some people might think…this movie was BRILLIANT…it was hilarious and cute and silly. not to mention when you get these two together , hilarity ensues….it has what i like to call OLD SCHOOL humor…because that was another gem by ferrel but this one is just so outlandish and witty…its worth watching over and over again..if u love to laugh…GO BUY IT! i am for sure

I recently heard someone say they were disappointed with Gilliam’s “update” of the Famous Brothers and their Fables. Whoever said that doesn’t understand Gilliam’s modus operandi. He is a genius at creating brand new worlds(Time Bandits and Brazil) and Bringing old Folktales and fantasy stories back to their roots while still making them entertaining(Baron Munchausen).

The same is true of the Brothers Grimm. He offers a unique spin on Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, and quite distinctly the Gingerbead Man, but at the same time retains the essence of the original stories. Fariy Tales are DARK! They were meant to frighten Children into BEHAVING!

I also appreciated the emphasis on Character. With the Exception of Peter Stormare’s hammy torturer, the Cast is Excellent. Matt Damon is always good, but Heath Ledger Steals the film with his portrayal of Jacob Grimm. And of course Jonathan Pryce is always enjoyable.

My biggest complaint though is a rather nasty scene involving a kitten. Gilliam can at times have an extremely nasty sense of humor and this was particularly unpleasant.

Gilliam’s films are not for all tastes I confess. But I thouroughly enjoyed this film. I’ll never look at the gingerbread man the same way again.

The Brothers Grimm is a suspenseful light-hearted ghost story in the cinematic tradition of such movies as Pirates of the Caribbean, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Sleepy Hollow. The brothers, played by Heath Ledger and Matt Damon, couldn’t be more enchanting in their roles in this fairy tale movie. Jacob, played by spectacle toting Heath Ledger, is the lovable underdog, an impractical poet who wears his gold heart on his sleeve. Wilhelm of course, couldn’t be more different as the devilishly dashing woman-chasing lead and older brother.

The film is set in French occupied Germany and is quite amusing for history buffs. There, Jacob and Wilhelm have a run in with the French army. They’ve roamed from town to town making up fairy tales, but not only in the story sense! Jacob largely follows Wilhelm around documenting the folk tales of the various villages they weave their `magic’ around. When they are captured, the scenes involving the French general (Jonathan Pryce) are classically macabre in every sense- I don’t want to spoil any surprises so you’ll have to see the movie to find out why. Caravaldi, a captain in that army, played by Peter Stormare, becomes a permanant pest and an unexpected side-kick. The character is completely absurd with an Italian accent, hilarious yet creepy.

With Caravaldi, the brothers find themselves embroiled in a real mystery when all the girls in the village disappear. The townsfolk are strange but the boys eventually warm up to the female lead, Angelika (Lena Headey) who leads them through the forest and tells them of the folk tales of her youth. There’s a little bit of that fairy tale magic mixed in with some European folklore which makes the movie interesting from an anthropological perspective… it makes you wonder what our folktales say of our history. The movie makes us imagine that these fairy or folk tales were real events, documented faithfully by the trusting Jacob. And there in the forest the brothers discover the truth behind the girls’ disappearance, the connection with Angelika’s missing father, and a wolf that has terrorized the forest.

The Brothers Grimm is spooky and maybe a little scary/disturbing for young children but don’t see the movie expecting a thriller- after all the movie is based on Grimm’s fairytales. It’s a lot of fun trying to guess which fairy tale is being alluded to in the various scenes as the Brothers seek to rid village of their haunting. And it is interesting how the movie weaves each story into another. There are great questions as to what is real and what is not… is it supernatural, a trick, magic?

Magic there is, and chemistry too for sure in this entertaining movie. Lovers of fairy tales and ghost stories alike will find themselves falling in love with The Brothers Grimm! Hopefully, the DVD or movie will be out for Halloween.

This lavish video, out from the Paris Opera Ballet, provides an interesting contrast to the Royal Ballet video (which I also reviewed). Both versions have their considerable merits, and I would not be without either one.

1. The reconstructions. La Bayaderes original choreography was by Petipa, but much of it (including the original Final Act) has been lost. Natalia Makarova of the Royal Ballet video has chosen to reconstruct the third act (inserting such things as the Golden Idol dance there), and tighten the action in the entire ballet. She cuts character dances like the Indian dance and Negro dance. Rudolf Nureyev has chosen a different route. He’s preserved more of the extant Petipa choreography, with the character dances. He’s ignored the Final Act altogether, so the Paris Bayadere ends with the Shades act.

Both versions have their merits. Makarova’s version gives the storyline some closure (Gamzatti and Solor’s wedding temple is destroyed by the gods and Nikya and Solor are reunited in the otherworld). On the other hand, she streamlines the dances quite a bit. Nureyev’s version is probably truer to Petipa’s choreography. However, all the character dances in Act 1, Scene 3 make the ballet seem more old-fashioned.

2. Production values.

In this, the Paris Ballet wins hands-down. The sets are lavish, the costumes have a more authentic Indian feel to them, and the camera work is more interesting, shooting dancers from different angles. However the Paris Ballet also saddles the women with unattractive wigs in the opening scenes, and the dark navy blue dresses do not look good in dim ballet lighting. The Royal Ballet uses the tried-and-true stage pan/close up method, but their costumes are in soft flattering colors that give the ballerinas a feminine, graceful look.

3. Corps dancing.

While the Royal Ballet corps is not bad, the Paris corps is truly eery in its perfection. All the corps members seem to have similar in height, build and even appearance. You can also see the benefits of the famously demanding Paris Ballet schooling (even for ballet standards). Their corps is amazing. In the Shades scene, all the legs are raised to the same angle, the descent of the shades is in perfectly timed intervals, they lean backwards at the same angle. The corps in all their dances are always symetrically spaced across the stage to form perfect lines. The dancers all have impeccable form, and you can see this in the dance variations, when poor form from one ballerina can really stick out like a sore thumb. This does not happen ANYWHERE in the Paris Ballet video.

4. Solo performances.

This is the one area where the Royal Ballet clearly has the edge. It’s not that Isabelle Guerin and Elisabeth Platel are bad (far from it!), just that Altynai Asylmuratova and Darcey Bussell are truly unforgettable in the Royal Ballet. I’ve been very lucky in my Nikyas — I’ve seen both Alina Cojacaru (enchanting) and Svetlana Zakharova live, but Altynai Asylmuratova (of the Kirov) is the best. She brings this combination of exotic beauty and fragility to the role. Russian Vaganova training is a real benefit for Nikya — their fluid, flexible use of their backs and arms is a strength in a role that relies so much on upper body work. The effect is simply enchanting.

In contrast, Isabelle Guerin, with her crystal-clean technique and somewhat austere style fails to enchant in the same way. For instance, in the Gamzatti/Nikya scene Asylmuratova expresses so much with a single wave of the hand. I felt that Guerin failed to convey Nikya’s desperation and pathos as convincingly. Shes a wonderful dancer, but Asylmuratova is unforgettable. In the Shades scene Guerin also doesn’t have the otherworldly, haunted ghost, pathetic quality of Asylmuratova.

Elisabeth Platel and Darcey Bussell are both excellent, athletic ballerinas. But Darcey Bussell’s cool, regal, stiff-backed elegance contrasts so well with Asylmuratova’s Nikya. Platel is icier; Bussell haughtier. It’s a tossup.

I prefer Laurent Hilaire’s more youthful, athletic Solor in the Paris Bayadere. Irek Mukhamedov is very impressive in other videos (Mayerling, for example) but he’s surprisingly bland as Solor.

Overall impressions: if you love Bayadere you have to get both dvd’s. In some ways they complement each other — one’s weaknesses are the other’s strengths.

“La Bayadere” was first presented at the St. Petersburg Bolshoi Theatre by the Czar’s Imperial Ballet (today the Kirov/Mariinsky Ballet) on January 23, 1877. It was the creation of Marius Petipa, the unrivled Maitre de Ballet of the St. Petersburg Imperial Ballet. “La Bayadere” became a classic among the great ballets of the 19th century and a useful vehicle for all the great ballerinas of the day. Petipa revised the ballet in 1884 for the ballerina Anna Johansson, and for the last time in 1900 for the Imperial Prima Ballerina Mathilde Kschessinskaya and for the benefit of the Premiere Danseur Noble Pavel Gerdt. For this 1900 revival Petipa completely refurbished with a new staging and fresh choreography. The ballet lived on for over 25 more years before it fell out of active the repertoire after the revolution. In 1941, the Ballet Master Vladimir Ponomarev and the great Danseur Vakhtang Chabukiani presented a new version of “La Bayadere” based on Petipa’s last revival of 1900. It is this version that has lived on to the present day at the Mariinksy Theatre, and that Rudolf Nureyev, the greatest dancer of his generation, learned when he danced there. Interestingly enough “La Bayadere” was the last ballet Nureyev danced with the Kirov/Mariinksy Ballet before he defected from the Soviet Union in 1961 while on tour with the company in France. In 1963 Nureyev staged Petipa’s masterful ‘Grand Pas Classique’ from “La Bayadere” known as “The Kingdom of the Shades”. This was the first of many stagings from the Petipa repertoire that Nureyev would go on to stage in the west, but it was not untill 3 months before his death in 1993 that his version of the full-length “La Bayadere” premiered, danced by the Paris Opera Ballet where he had been Artistic Director since 1983.

Nureyev’s production of “La Bayadere” is absolutly magnificent. He called upon his close friend Ninel Kurgapkina, former Ballerina and now teacher/coach of the Kirov/Mariinksy Ballet to assist him with the production. Their staging of “La Bayadere” follows the 1941 Soviet revival of Ponomareyev and Chabukiani almost exactly, with changes being very few (among these changes was the revision of dances for the female corps de ballet, along with making the male corps de ballet more prominent).

This production of “La Bayadere” is a lavish dream of the ancient southern Orient seen through 19th century European Eyes. The spectacular decor, designed by Ezio Frigerio, strays far away from the typical painted-backcloth-type sets of most ballet productions and instead, gives the Paris Opera Ballet sets to dance among – the design of the stage decor will take your breath away, as it looks very much like a priceless brazen antique – the wings and the top sides of the stage are decorated with paintings of palm trees and the like, the palace of the Maharajah in Act I/Scene 2 and in Act II pays obvious homage to the Taj Mahal, and it is glorious to see “The Kingdom of the Shades” scene danced in the jungle. The costumes, designed by Franca Squarciapino match the decor absolutly, and in the same regard take inspiration from the Indian Orient. The one thing that spoils the effect of the wonderful decor is the stage floor, which is covered with light gray marley and sealed off with rows of white tape stretching from the footlights on upstage, obviously put there to keep the dancers in perfect rows (as it does – one will never see the Kirov/Mariinky or the Bolshoi in need of such stage markers).

On the DVD liner notes, and in the credits, the music is credited as being re-orchestrated by John Lanchbery (conductor and musical director for the Royal Opera House for many years). In his past productions, Nureyev had called upon Lanchbery to revise/re-orchestrate the scores of Minkus, but unlike Lanchbery’s severe revisions of the Minkus scores for Nureyev’s revivals of such ballets as “Don Quixote”, the “Paquita” Grand pas Classique, as well as Natalia Makarova’s stagings of “La Bayadere”, he has thankfully only altered a few brief passages – these changes are so minute that one wonders why it was even necessary to have Lanchbery do anything to the score in the first place, as only a person 100% familiar with the original Minkus score inside and out can make out the differences. Thankfully the score of “La Bayadere” is presented here as it Minkus originally orchestrated it (with the exception of the few changes Lanchbery did), a rare treat in the west (most everyone in the ballet world finds the Lanchbery revisions of Minkus’s music to be horrific anyway). The scintillating and beautifully melodious music of Minkus sparkles in the hands of the conductor Michel Queval, making the look and feel of the ballet succeed even more. One should never judge Minkus’s music for symphonic substance, but instead for its theatrical effectiveness, and even more so for the fact that the music completely accents the movements of classical ballet, and accompanies the dramatic scenes perfectly. (Note – See CD Decca 436 917-2 for the score of “La Bayadere” as re-orchestrated/revised by John Lanchbery for Natalia Makarova’s staging for American Ballet Theatre in 1980. This recording is performed by the English Chamber Orchestra and conducted by Richard Bonynge)

For this performance, the leading roles are danced by Isabelle Guerin as Nikiya, Elisabeth Platel as Gamzatti, and Laurent Hilare as Solor. As with most of the ballerinas that have been coming out of the Paris Opera Ballet lately (with the exception of Aurelie Dupont and Emanna Floria of course), the leading danseuses in this film are good, but they are far from being great, and give performances that are very neutral and plain. Isabelle Guerin gives a worthy portrayl of Nikiya in this performance, though her acting is rather cardboard and docile – in the dramatic scenes the woman almost seems indifferent. On the plus side her dancing in the Act I/Scene 1 ‘Variation of Nikiya’, and especially in “The Kingdom of the Shades” is excellent technically (the greatest interpretation on film is without a doubt Altynai Assylmoratova of the Kirov/Mariinksy Ballet as danced in the Royal Ballet film of “La Bayadere”). Elisabeth Platel gives a good portrayl of Gamzatti as a character, but her dancing is very poor – I must say that her variation in the ‘Grand Pas Classique’ of Act II is absolutly shameful (some reviewers below give her much praise – they either know little about good ballet dancing or they need their eyes checked!). Laurent Hilaire gives a wonderful portrayl of Solor, with strong partnering of both ballerinas and elegant dancing in his variations, not to mention his great entrance in the Grand Procession at the start of Act II atop a pointy-eared elephant on wheels. Wilfred Romoli gives a graceful and elequant performance as the Golden Idol, though he lacks the “pazzaz” one should have when dancing the ‘Bazhok’ as it is known in Russia, while Sandrine Marache is charming and lovely in the ‘Danse Manu’ (doing a great job of keeping the water jug balanced on her head). The 3 Shades variations in “The Kingdom of the Shades” scene are perhaps the biggest dissapointment of all in this entire performance. Agnes Letestu, Clotilde Vayer, and Nathalie Rique do the honors here, complete with really stupid smiles on their faces that have absolutly no business among the magnificent courtly opulace of “The Kingdom of the Shades”. For some reason what is supposed to be the last variation gets performed first, danced by Agnes Letestu (complete with her ridiculous smile). She does the best job out of the 3, suprising considering her terrible performance in the Paris Opera Ballet’s “Paquita” film. Clotilde Vayer dances the next variation (which is really supposed to be the first one) and does an awful, boring job, again with a ridiculous grin on her face. For some reason towards the end of Vayer’s variation the camera cuts off her performance and instead gives us a shot of the corps de ballet dancers feet, perhaps because Vayer’s arabasque releve-elance’s, which are supposed to be traveling on the diagnale but aren’t, dont look so good. The last variation (which is supposed to be the second one) is danced by Nathalie Rique. She demonstrates how a ballerina can dance well but have absolutly no spark, and again we have a ridiculously out-of-place smile that warrants a good wack across the face. The Corps de Ballet does well, but its obvious that the rows of tape on the stage floor are responsible for their perfect, straight lines (watch the Kirov/Mariinksy Ballet dance this scene in their film of “La Bayadere”, and on another film called “The Kirov Ballet in London” to see true Corps de Ballet perfection un-aided by a taped up stage floor).

This staging of “La Bayadere” is perhaps the greatest version available on film regarding production (sets, costumes, etc.), even more so than Natalia Makarova’s sandwiched versions for American Ballet Theatre (in 1980) and for the Royal Ballet (in 1990). In 2001, the Kirov/Mariinksy Ballet (the former Imperial Ballet) presented “La Bayadere” in a reconstruction of Petipa’s last revival of 1900. Using the Stepanov choreographic notation and other sources included in the Sergeyev Collection housed at the Harvard University Library and from their own archives, the Kirov/Mariinksy Ballet completely restored the choreography, sets, costumes, and the mime sequences to their original form (one reviewer on this page says that the original choreography of “La Bayadere” is lost, which is not true, as it was notated by Petipa’s regisseur Nikolai Sergeyev and his assistants around the time of the Ballet Master’s 1900 revival). The original Minkus score was restored from the composer’s orignal hand-written manuscript, and what a wonderful masterpeice of ballet music it is. Let us hope that this reconstruction of “La Bayadere” doesnt stay to long from DVD/video, just as the Kirov/Mariinksy Ballet’s 1999 reconstruction of the 1890 premiere of “The Sleeping Beauty” has. It would be a great disservice to the world of ballet….but given the ridiculous politics of the current Kirov/Mariinksy Ballet, it is likely niether production will ever find its way to DVD/video. Such a waste.

The Paris Opera Ballet has been releasing quite alot of their repertoire onto DVD over the last few years. I would never go so far as to say that they are the greatest company in the world, but they are exceptional. Unfortunatly many people feel that ballet dancing cant get any better than what they see in these Paris Opera performances – dont ever let good productions and great costumes fool you! If you want to see great ballet dancing, watch American Ballet Theatre, the Royal Ballet, the Bolshoi, and especially the Kirov/Mariinksy Ballet, which is without a doubt the greatest company in the world.

Nureyev’s production of “La Bayadere” is more than just a ballet -it was Nureyev’s last offering to the world before he passed away in 1993. But aside from that, this production is a resplendant grand spectacle in the tradition of the old 19th century ‘Grand Ballets’, and it echos the love and passion that Nureyev felt for the art of classical ballet – it is Nureyev’s greatest staging of a ballet from the Classical Repertoire, and I think the old Maestro Petipa would have been proud.

Winchester ‘73 is one of the most enduring and popular films of James Stewart’s career, for several reasons; it was the first of five teamings with brilliant, underrated director Anthony Mann, who retooled Stewart’s drawling, ‘aw-shucks’ persona into a laconic, edgier, more flawed hero; it featured a brilliant cast, including Shelley Winters, Dan Duryea, Stephen McNally, John McIntyre, and, in VERY early appearances, Rock Hudson and Tony Curtis; visually, it is spectacular, one of the most beautiful Black and White films ever made, with deep-focus photography highlighting rugged Arizona settings that literally leap from the screen; and, most of all, it is a terrific variation of ‘Cain and Abel’, told through the premise of the search for a ‘one-of-a-kind’ rifle Stewart wins in a competition, then loses through treachery. It’s the kind of film that offers new insights each time you view it, as the actions and motivations of ‘good’ brother Stewart and ‘bad’ brother McNally become better understood.

What truly makes this DVD an ‘essential’, though, is the bonus track…Described as an ‘interview’ with Stewart, it is actually an audio commentary that runs through the film, offering not only his reflections about the making of Winchester ‘73, but insights about his career, working with John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, and his great friends Henry Fonda and John Wayne, even a nice story about his long-time mount, Pie. Recorded several years ago for the laserdisc edition of Winchester ‘73, it provides a rare opportunity to hear a screen legend reminisce (and makes you wish Wayne and Fonda had lived long enough to have offered personal observations about THEIR classic films!)

This is a DVD NOT to be missed!

The story goes that in 1950 Jimmy Stewart was looking around for something a little different for himself, something where he could play a character less folksy and warm. He sure did find it in this film, as well as all the other magnificent westerns he did with gritty, noir director, Anthony Mann (T-Men, Raw Deal, Railroaded, etc). This is the first of their collaborations.

When the film was first shown to test audiences, there were titters in the crowd when Jimmy Stewart’s name appeared in the credits. “Mr. Smith” in a western? Shooting people? Please. By the end of the film, the tittering was all done and Stewart had established himself as a viable western hero (although in truth the magic of these Mann/Stewart westerns is that the characters Stewart plays are hardly “heroic.” They are usually driven, neurotic men, nearly shifty-eyed, with a mean streak a mile wide – bitter men, and always very, very angry and eager to kill.

The basic set-up of this film is beautifully simple: Jimmy Stewart has a prize rifle stolen from him, a Winchester Model 1973 (which at the time the film takes place was state-of-the-art in the world of firearms), and he spends the rest of the movie hunting the man that stole it.

The story unfolds, however, as the movie rolls quickly along to something much more complex, culminating in one of the finest shootouts in movie history. The two principal actors of the film, James Stewart and Stewart McNally, spent a great deal of time practicing with their rifles (in Stewart’s case Mann often found him walking around the set with bleeding knuckles, the results of his hours of self-training working the classic lever-action Winchester). Their hard work paid of in a tremendous realism.

Anthony Mann brought in cinematographer, William Daniels, for Winchester ‘73, a veteran who most notably had worked a great deal with Garbo in the 30’s. Daniels brought his tremendous sense of lighting to the table to create one of the most beautiful looking Westerns of all time. Daniels’ light, combined with Mann’s unmatched visual sense, made things look nearly 3-demensional in their reality. When viewing this film, watch for the staggering long shots, or the scenes near dusk or at night. Pure texture and light – at once glamorous yet real.

This film also has my favorite depiction of aging Western legend, Wyatt Earp, the Law in Dodge, played with easy authority by Will Greer. Greer always offers his suggestions to town folks with a warm smile, as when he asks Stewart to give up his gun in an early scene. There is always a bit of steel in the old gunfighter’s eyes, though, and folks always do just as he suggests. Quickly.

All in all a great treat and a must-have for any fan of the Western (or for that matter, any lover of movies). A true classic all the way. –Mykal Banta

This 40-minute TV special tells the story of Rerun, Linus and Lucy’s very cute younger brother (I loved the scenes with him stuck on the back of his mother’s bicycle). As the smallest child he feels left out of playing around with the other kids and wishes for a dog for Xmas. He starts a great friendship with Snoopy but Charlie Brown is reluctant to let him go. Snoopy’s brothers also visit and cause much calamity.

It’s all harmless fun, if not completely indisposable. Though the DVD is where the real worth comes in. Included is a decent documentary on the original Charlie Brown Christmas, with interviews with cast members and the filmmakers. Also included is Charlie Brown’s Christmas Tales, a series of Xmas sketches featuring different Peanuts characters, lasting about 5 minutes each. Some very kiddie trailers are on there also.

The DVD is in 1.33:1 full frame, as drawn, with Dolby 2.0 sound.

This hour-long Christmas special aired on ABC in prime-time last year, and it’s now out on DVD with two featurettes that were produced specifically to be tacked on to ABC’s recent airings of “A Charlie Brown Christmas”. One of them is a brief documentary on the creation of the original 1965 Christmas special with rarely-seen animation from the early sixties, making it a must-see for Peanuts historians.

There’s no underlying religious theme here – just a string of family-friendly gags recycled from strips dating back to the sixties. The only thing here that might confuse your pre-schooler is why any parent would name their kid “Rerun”. (It’s actually a nickname; Lucy felt alienated when Linus was born, and she experienced a “rerun” of those feelings when her new baby brother joined the family. The kid’s real name has never been revealed.)

Long-time Peanuts fans are making unflattering comparisons between this special and the 1965 holiday classic, but I think there’s room on your shelf for both of them. This is a cute and funny cartoon that the whole family can enjoy together.

I loved this movie since I was a kid. It took me, if you can believe it, 5 years to track down a copy, and even now it’s not available from where I found it. Amy Irving is delightful and, surprisingly, can sing very well. Clive Revill is a riot as the king and for once the prince really is charming. The script has taken quite a few liberties with the story, but it’s so cute I really didn’t care– Anyway, this was my favorite movie when I was a kid and I still love watching it.

Rumpelstiltskin was released in 1987 and starred Billy Barty as Rumpelstiltskin and Amy Irving as Katie, the miller’s daughter. It’s the well-known tale from Grimms expanded and made into a musical.

In 1964 director/producer Stanley Kubrick created the nuclear war comedic masterpiece “Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love The Bomb”. He followed that with the science fiction masterpiece “2001: A Space Oddysee”. Stanley Kubrick would reach his creative peak with his next film. An Adaption of Anothony Burgess’novel “A Clockwork Orange.” Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange is one of those films that you will either love or hate. The film centers around the character of Alexander DeLarge (played to perfection by Malcolm McDowell) a 15 year old “droog” who with his friends Pete (Michael Tarn), Georgie (James Marcus), and Dim (Warren Clarke) drink Milk Laced with drugs at the local “Milkbar” and then go out on the town at night, doing horrible things to people. During one incident Alex is captured and taken to prison. He finds out about a treatment that can get him of prison. He goes through with the treatment (which will make him sick when he attempts to commit an act of violence), is released from prison and thrown back into the world, unable to defend himself. Out of all the things that make this movie great, the number one element is the performance of Malcolm McDowell as Alex. The entire movie revolves around him so if McDowell’s performance isn’t top notch then the movie isn’t top notch. McDowell was in his late twenties when he made this movie. In the novel Alex is 15 years old. So although being much older then his character McDowell plays the adventureous youth wonderfully. Suprisingly McDowell was not nominated for an Academy Award. Another really strong element is the music. Never in my life have I seen a movie (non musical) where the music plays such an important role in a film. Gioacchino Rossini’s “The Thieving Magpie” during the fight scence against the rival droogs. “The William Tell Overture” played 5 times too fast during the orgy scene and the use of Ludwig Van Beethoven’s “Symphony no. 9″ are just a few examples of how music plays an important role in this film. As far as things being wrong with the movie. The only real thing is the lack of any real supporting cast. Sure there are a few standout performances. Particularily James Marcus as Georgie and in no means are the rest of the supporting cast bad actors. There just isn’t a real supporing cast there. But McDowell’s performace makes up for it. This film get’s 5 stars because of 3 things. Number one is the performance of Malcolm McDowell. Number two is the use of music in such a different and unique way and number three is the originality of it. This movie came out in 1971 and I haven’t seen any movie like it that came out before or since then. A Clockwork Orange was nominated for several Academy Awards including “best picture” and “best director” but it lost in all categories to William Friedkin’s “The French Connection”

In which high government officials are seen as the moral equivalents of street thugs (just better at p.r.), demonstrating that nothing has changed in 35 years.

The HD transfer is spectacular. This is how I remember the movie upon its opening in 1971. Pristine, startling, amazing.

Repeated viewings over the years of worn-out circuit prints, VHS and standard-def DVD had dimmed the movie’s capacity to astonish. Now, in HD, the luminous brilliance, texture and color of the images are restored, and the richness of the images makes a tremendous difference to the film’s impact. The sound is also excellent — certainly superior to the original theatrical release in the days of optical soundtracks.

In addition to the beauty of the Hi-Def picture, this is worth owning because (at last) it is a close approximation of the original theatrical aspect ratio (screen shape); the theatrical presentation being, after all, the venue for which Kubrick composed his shots. (Ignore those who claim he meant this film to be seen in full-frame 1.33:1, as in all the previous home video releases. He clearly created it to be seen in theaters, and in theaters he had the image matted to 1.66:1, which is very close to the aspect-ratio of this HD DVD.)

Buy it; watch it on your big-screen 1080 HDTV in a dark room, uninterrupted. Real horrorshow!

This is a 2-disc “Special Edition,” with the same extras as the standard-def DVD in the new (2007) boxed set: commentaries, trailer, new interviews with Wm. Friedkin, Sydney Pollack, Malcolm McDowell, Wendy Carlos, Mrs. Kubrick, others.

Then hope for a speedy HD release of “Barry Lyndon” (1975), Kubrick’s underappreciated masterpiece following “A Clockwork Orange,” which will also benefit greatly from High-Definition.

Why couldn’t you have at least included some other classic UPA entries in the Jolly Frolics series, such as the wonderfully creative and artistic masterpiece, Rooty Toot Toot, The Tell-Tale Heart, the many Mr. Magoo theatrical shorts you hold license to, etc..?

Again, I’m very happy to finally be able to own these on one convenient DVD package, but it seems like very little effort was put into this release. These cartoons were not aimed at children and I don’t expect the majority of sales to come from them either. These are among the most artistic, innovative, stylized and brilliant animated film productions of all-time!

The UPA cartoons deserve their own comprehensive release so please stop neglecting your animated film library!!!

I am writing as a non native “american”, so culturally McBoing Boing’s influence in my life is not as deep as in many other readers or tv spectators may be. Nevertheless, I am a part of those delighted by sepcific UPA members animation work such as John Hubley and, in this particular case, Robert “Bobe” Cannon.

Cannon’s visual influence in animation, according to Bendazzi’s “Cartoons” (book available from Amazon.com) “born from Matisse, Picasso and Klee”, certainly proves more than plain entertainment animation, in this case with 4 McBoing Boing’s shorts.

The reason to miss the five stars is not because of Cannon’s work, but because of Sony, as video-archive compiler and reseller.

Due to UPA’s importance in animation history by rebelling to a dominant Disney’s realistic style (around the mid 40’s)and, ironically, turning later to a great influence for future Disney animation “experimental” styles (which turned into Adademy Award winning productions such as “Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom”), a first try to present some of Cannon’s work would deserve some extras especially considering the DVD format.

The funny fact is that Sony decided to include most of McBoing Boing’s shorts in this DVD as extras in their comic-cult movie “Hellboy” (just missing “Gerald McBoing Boing’s Symphony”) but didn’t mind to add any documentary or additional data for “Cartoon Adventures Starring Gerald McBoing Boing”.Woludn’t it be nice for corporations to think once in a while that costumers can be interested in more than fun-pack version releases?

Anyway Robert Cannon’s work is still extense and a great recommendation for future acquisitions in Sony’s archives for DVD compliations would be:

Christopher Crumpet’s Playmate (1953)

Fuget’s Budget (1954)

Along with some extras about UPS history.
